After a week’s break due to the symposium, exams and project work we can finally restart playing our favourite game, Counter Strike Condition Zero.

I’ve discovered that playing in 640×480 resolution lets me play better since the crosshair is much bigger and that makes it easy to see when the background texture is of a similar colour. This gives me an advantage when used scoped weapons like the Krieg and the Bullpup.

Other Blogging Platforms

WordPress is our preferred platform since it is so flexible and there is a lot of documentation and tutorials available for it.

However if one of our members would like to try some other blogging platform they are welcome to do so. We support all PHP and MySQL based platforms and also have Ruby On Rails. Just tell us what you are interested in trying out and we’ll help you set it up.

Bandwidth Issues

Looks like Vinod is using a lot of bandwidth. This might be because of the posts about Dragon Ball which seem to be attracting a disproportionately large amount of visitors, especially through Google Image Search. Another reason might be the lively conversations going on in the comments section of his blog. Vinod also recently reported some problems with his comments. We are looking into it.

Ampli5 Restrictions

We neglected to mention that we offer free Ampli5 hosted WordPress blogs only to friends or friends of friends. If we don’t know you and you want a blog with us, then we will charge you a nominal monthly fee depending on your bandwidth and space usage. These restrictions are simply because we do not have unlimited bandwidth and time to provide support for a lot of users.

Exec-PHP

WordPress is designed in such a way that PHP code will not be executed when it is placed in posts and pages. Exec-PHP plugin lets you execute PHP code in a page or a post by allowing the user to tick a checkbox (when writing or editing a post) to indicate that there is PHP code in that post/page that is to be run.

Dark Themes Are Out

Most of the sites on the Internet are based on bright colour schemes for a reason. They look clean and professional.

While you think your dark theme looks cool and futuristic you should remember that if your audience is the entire Internet there are going to be middle aged people and senior citizens who won’t be impressed with your hard to read colour scheme or the after-images they get when they view a bright page.

So drop that dark theme and go white.

WP-Shortstat

Shortstat gives you details blog statistics in your blog dashboard. This is somewhat useful if you do not use an advanced tool like Google Analytics. I have this installed since Analytics is sometime bothersome with the excessive AJAX.

WP-Spamfree

WP-Spamfree will totally eradicate automated comment spam on your blog. Using a combination of Javascript and cookies (neither of which bots can process) it eliminates spammy comments so that they don’t even appear in Akismet leaving you to sort through them for regular comments. Highly recommended!

SRG Clean Archives

This plugin can create a nice list of all your posts in an archive page. Simply create a new WordPress page called Archives or whatever you want and put the function call given on that page. (You might also have to get a plugin to execute PHP in WordPress pages for this to work.) You will see a list of your post titles classified by month.

The problem is, if you have 700 posts like me then it will make over 700 queries to your database to display the page. Massive database load.

Hello Dolly

This plugin comes with WordPress and is totally useless. All it does is display random lyrics from the song Hello, Dolly by Louis Armstrong. Delete it immediately since it is totally pointless. I wonder why they include it in every version…

I’m not linking to the plugin since it does nothing interesting or useful.
